It was established in France in the early 1800’s. The French Trotter background came from Normandy Breeders importing English Thoroughbreds as well as using Norfolk Roadsters to produce lighter, more active horses.
Crossing Standardbreds gave the French Trotter more speed and produced the modern French Trotters. It became a recognized breed in 1922
